JCR Committee: Male Welfare Representative
About the post
The Male welfare officer exists to provide students with someone impartial with whom they can discuss anything that is bothering them, but who, as someone still part of the student community, is uniquely placed to understand the kinds of worries undergraduates can face. Though a welfare officer cannot be a counsellor, he or she can direct you to the best next port of call if you have any problems with sexual or mental health, and champion your cause if you need to take up an issue with college.
There are separate male and female Corpus Welfare Officers because some people might be more comfortable talking to someone of a particular gender, and because the female welfare officer has responsibilities on the Women's Council which it might be somewhat odd for a guy to fulfill. However, this by no means entails that the girls should go to one, and the guys should go to another!
The Male Welfare Officer attends any CUSU welfare meetings relevant to Corpus, and tends to be responsible for picking up subsidised condoms from CUSU when requested by members of college (just take a slip from the male welfare pigeon hole, fill it in and put it in mine and I'll get these to you asap):

In addition to this, Welfare Officers also forward on any information from CUSU or Cambs Police to the student body as a whole pertaining to welfare issues, such as advice on personal safety and burglary. Most recently both welfare have had to liaise with both college and students concerning extensive building work on Library court, and the equally extensive disturbance it has been causing.
