JCR Committee: Rhys Locke
2016–17: Academic and Access Officer
Hi, I’m Rhys! :) My role is effectively to dispel as many myths and misconceptions about Cambridge, answer all sorts of questions from a student’s perspective about life here, the admissions process etc, and most importantly to ensure that students are not dissuaded from an application because of their educational background. These things all happen during access events named later in this description.
I am responsible for ensuring we have enough student helpers for all Access events (mainly school visits throughout Michaelmas and Lent terms, but also for interviews, admissions week, open days, masterclasses/summer schools and the CUSU Shadowing Scheme).
I will be meeting regularly with Corpus’s admissions team, so if there any ways you think our access work could be improved based on your own experience or on what you’ve seen, don’t hesitate to get in touch so I can pass this on.
I am also here to represent any academic concerns of Corpus undergrads to the college. On the basis of this, I will be setting up an academic drop box in college to give everyone another platform to pass on their concerns. I am also already in talks with the admissions team about having a ‘current students to new freshers’ Q and A in October 2016 so we can give some ’student to student’ tips on how we found best to manage the transition from school work to university work here.
