JCR Committee: Rhys Grant

2007–8: Male Welfare Representative

As male welfare officer, it’s my role to ensure that the males of Corpus are happy and enjoying a stress free life here. If you don’t feel that you are, then feel free to contact me for advice or support (everything will be confidential) or just a general chat…..I will get lonely if people don’t. Obviously, you don't have to be male, females are more than welcome to contact me too if you feel you need advice.

As with my predecessors there will always be a supply of tea and biscuits (unless I’m having some sort of essay crisis in which case I may have eaten them as a form of procrastination). I’m generally in my room, 6TS8, or I can be found in the bar or JCR. Failing that contact me on 07949712671, or email me (rg359).

2008–9: Male Welfare Representative

2009–10: Vice-President

As Vice President, I'm Patrick's right hand man. The main role of the job is to organise Fresher's week, sort out the room ballot and liase between the JCR and CUSU. I'm available to discuss issues whether related to college, CUSU, JCR or other and provide practical help as necessary. I'm basically happy to help with anything and answer any questions you may have, as is the rest of the committee. If you need me, I'm usually in my room (Q1), the bar or the library. You can also drop me an email (rg359) or get hold of me on my mobile (unless I'm in college, in which case I probably won't have reception! - seriously T-mobile is a rubbish phone network in Cambridge, lol) or you can reach me on extension 28471.

2010–11: President

As the President, my job is to run and coordinate the JCR committee. Perhaps my more important role though is to represent the views of the students to the College, and visa versa, hopefully finding some sort of acceptable middle ground for all. Obviously myself and the rest of the JCR committee can only represent your views if you let us know what they are, so please do get in touch if you have any questions, ideas, comments, concerns, or just generally want a chat.

My main aims this year are to:

  • Ensure students are continually represented on the College committees and make sure that our voices are heard rather than being put to one side as they have been in the past,
  • Ensure College acts on the views of students by no longer having informal meetings, instead everything will be minuted with action points so that issues can easily be chased up,
  • Keep the rent increases down and make sure we don’t have the loss of any more facilities by trying to find alternative ways of saving money or increasing income (with the help of the Rent Subcommittee which hopefully understand numbers and finance a bit better than I do!),
  • Make the JCR more transparent so that you know exactly what we are doing by having termly reports stating our achievements and our aims for the following term,
  • Reduce the length of Open Meetings by publishing background material prior to the meeting so that everyone is already up-to-date on arrival,
  • Ensure agreements with College and other pieces of information are not lost by having agreements formally written into policies and published on the JCR website and by keeping the archives updated,
  • Improve the JCR website, with new sections (e.g. Green and Charities) and updated information (e.g. publish sports results),
  • Take suggestions from you on how you want the JCR to function and what you want us to do,
  • Keep the JCR motived and committed to working for you.

With four years of experience of the JCR committee, I’m sure I can do a good job. But as I’ve said, if you have any concerns or comments, please do get in touch.

When I’m not doing JCR-related work, I’m currently a fourth year Biochemistry student, going on to do a PhD in Genetics and can quite often be found in the Bar or standing around outside the Plodge. Come and have a chat anytime if you want to know more :)
