2015–16: Ethnic Minorities Officer

Hi guys, I’m a first year studying HSPS and am really excited to be your Ethnic Minorities Officer this year :) I’m going to be responsible for making sure ethnic minority students feel comfortable, accepted and represented at Corpus, as well as acting as someone to come to in any situations where they don’t.

In terms of my aims for the year, I’m going to be working with access to put Cambridge on the map for more ethnic minority secondary school students; organising celebrations and events such as those for Black History Month; and encouraging ALL students to think critically about race and equality in our daily discourse. Expect inter-collegiate workshops in Michaelmas where we’ll plug, unpack and debunk some big terms such as kyriarchy, intersectionality, reverse racism and white privilege. It’s going to be fun.

This year I will also be acting as your Disabled Students’ Rep, a role in which I will attend to the welfare of students with disabilities, as well as acting as their representative on the JCR. I similarly want to engage college in conversations regarding how we can help to eradicate ableism in Cambridge.

Please remember that there’s no question too ’silly’ and no complaint too ‘minor’ – if you ever feel uncomfortable about something race, culture or disability related or have queries, drop me an email at mf555@cam.ac.uk
