2011–12: Green and Charities Officer

Corpus students on their own are not going to prevent climate change and eliminate world poverty but there are small things we can do as a community to make the world a better place. Cambridge is an intense and insular place and it is sometimes easy to forget that the planet faces more serious problems than the next essay or exam. As well as focussing on one’s own personal progress it is important to keep an eye on the bigger picture.

On the one hand, my job is to make the college community more environmentally aware. This means both encouraging staff and students to act in a ‘green’ manner but also making it easier for them do so.

On the other hand, my job is to encourage members of the college to support and raise money for charitable causes. A majority of our efforts go towards the university wide charity organisation, RAG, but there are also many other good causes besides RAG that we can help.

To both these ends I shall be running a number of events and initiatives over the year.

The most important part of Green and Charities Rep, however, is to get students and staff enthusiastic and engaged with these two enormously important issues. Please do bear green and charitable matters in mind throughout the year and encourage your friends to think about them too.

If you want to get involved or have any suggestions then please do get in touch.
