JCR Committee: Alex Slinger

2008–9: Treasurer

Budget well, Spend sensibly and all is possible!

2009–10: Treasurer

The Treasurer of the JCR (actually his official title is 'The Junior Treasurer') is famous for agonising over even the smallest expenditures. Saving, he reasons, allows the JCR to purchase bigger items at the end of the financial year and still run a surplus. In recent years (in Cambridge the financial year runs parallel to the academic year) the JCR bought new basketball hoops, has helped to fund an access bus, and did up the squash courts at Leckers.

In fact, pretty much everything that goes on in Corpus (and believe me, lots goes on) from Slacks to sports and music is partially, or entirely, paid for by the JCR. What this means is that Corpus students control the running of all the cultural and sporting activities and social events which occur within Corpus. That's what we call the power of the purse.

Seriously though, the JCR and the Treasurer are the first group you come to in Corpus if you are setting up a new society, social group or sports team and you require money to get you started, or if your existing club or society needs new equipment or funding. The JCR can also point you in the right direction if you are in personal financial hardship, though it is generally the Tutors who are of most assistance to individuals (Tutors are Fellows at Corpus whose job is to help students with emotional, academic or financial needs).

So, there you are, the JCR has lots of money just for you, the students of Corpus, to use to play hard, act hard, and party hard. So if you'd like some of this money, or you'd just like to meet one of Corpus' top blokes, then look out for the Treasurer.
